Bio

Shazad Ashraf is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Clinical Director of Research and Development at University Hospitals Birmingham. His work focuses on integrating artificial intelligence and digital technologies into surgery and diagnostics to improve safety, efficiency, and patient outcomes.

He is involved in national collaborative programmes including COBIx, a major NHS study on AI-assisted digital pathology, and TEMSET-24K, a surgical video analytics initiative developing large-scale annotated datasets for surgical AI model training. He also co-developed RAPTOR, a digital triage and pathway optimisation platform recently featured at MICCAI, supporting AI-driven prioritisation across colorectal cancer pathways.

Shazad completed a DPhil at the University of Oxford and held an Academic Clinical Lectureship in the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, focusing on antibody engineering and translation into clinical setting. As a Birmingham Health Partners Fellow and NHS Responsible AI Champion, he works across academia (University of Warwick, University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University), the NHS, and industry to promote ethical, secure, and scalable adoption of AI within healthcare systems.
