Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence is the government department responsible for implementation of government defence policy, and has a close working relationship with the NHS to treat injured military personnel and develop new medical technologies.

Since 2001 the Ministry of Defence’s Royal Centre for Defence Medicine has been based at University Hospitals Birmingham, first at Selly Oak Hospital and now at the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. This partnership between military and civilian health professionals has saved many lives and led to the development of new techniques for treating trauma and burns patients.
